Understanding Pricelist
A price list is a named pricing tier that controls two things at once: what prices a customer sees and which products they can access. Every customer in WizCommerce is assigned to exactly one price list. When a rep selects a customer in WizOrder, or when a buyer logs into WizShop, their assigned price list loads automatically, with no manual switching needed.
Who Uses Price Lists?
Price lists affect everyone who interacts with WizCommerce, but in different ways:
- Admins: Create, configure, and manage price lists. Admins decide which products are included in each tier, set the prices, and assign customers to the right tier.
- Sales Reps: Work within the price lists assigned to their customers. Depending on their permissions, reps may temporarily switch to a different price list during order entry.
- Buyers: See prices and products based on their assigned tier when browsing WizShop or placing orders with a rep. They never see other tiers or pricing.
How Price Lists Work
Each price list does two things simultaneously:
- Controls pricing: Each product in the price list has a specific price for that tier. Customers only ever see the prices in their assigned tier.
- Controls product visibility: Products not included in a customer's price list are completely hidden. They do not appear in search, the catalog, or the cart.
Example: Three Pricing Tiers:
| Product | Wholesale | Preferred | VIP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metal Vase | $685.00 | $650.00 | $615.00 |
| Scented Candle | $350.00 | $332.50 | $315.00 |
| Ceramic Planter | $420.00 | $399.00 | $378.00 |
A customer assigned to the Preferred tier sees $650, $332.50, and $399 — they never see Wholesale or VIP prices.
How Price Lists Control Product Visibility
If a product is not included in a customer's assigned price list, it is completely hidden — it does not appear in search results, the catalog, or the cart. This gives admins precise control over what each customer can see and buy. For example:
- Hide discontinued products from retail customers while keeping them visible for distributors clearing old stock
- Launch new products to VIP customers first before making them available to all tiers
- Hide custom or made-to-order products from standard tiers
Common Pricing Tiers
Most wholesale businesses maintain 4–6 pricing tiers:
| Tier | Typical Use |
|---|---|
| Wholesale | Default pricing for new customers |
| Preferred | Better pricing for high-volume or loyal customers |
| VIP / Preferred Plus | Best pricing for top-tier accounts and key partnerships |
| Distributor | Specialized pricing for distribution partners |
| Retail | Full retail pricing for non-wholesale buyers |
Tip: Fewer tiers mean easier maintenance. For one-off custom pricing, use the Discount Engine on top of a base tier rather than creating a new price list for every exception.
