How to Set Up Freight Automation in WizCommerce?

Freight automation applies a freight or shipping charge to an order automatically, using a rule engine tied to the shipping-charge field on the cart. Once it's set up, freight either populates as the order is placed or prompts the buyer toward a free-freight threshold, so the charge is visible up front instead of being added later at invoicing.

Freight rules are configured for your account by the WizCommerce team, you decide how freight should be charged and they build the logic into your account. Follow the steps below to set it up.

» Step 1: Choose how freight is charged

Freight model When to use it
Flat percentage of order value (e.g. 18% under the free-freight threshold) Simplest and most common, covers freight on average without per-order maths
Free freight over a threshold (e.g. free above $300) Pair with a cart prompt that tells buyers how much more to add to qualify
Rate matrix (by region or zip, product category, and/or cart value) Rates differ by location or product type, for example bulky items that cost more to ship
Live carrier rates (FedEx / UPS / ShipStation) Real-time rates, requires product weights and dimensions on every SKU, and is not available for LTL shipments

» Step 2: Set up your freight rule

  1. Confirm the details you want to charge on, order value, ship-to location, product category, customer type, or sales rep
  2. Share the model you picked and its supporting data with WizCommerce team, the percentage, thresholds, rate table, or product weights and dimensions for live carrier rates
  3. Fill in our Freight Configuration Form and share it with WizCommerce team. This is a general form covering the most common freight setups, depending on your requirements we may ask for some additional details before the rule can be configured
  4. Wait for the rule to be configured on your account, this can usually go live within few days.
  5. Place test orders across each condition in WizShop and WizOrder, then check the freight amount and any prompt appear correctly before going live

» Step 3: Assign freight to a specific customer (optional)

You can attach a freight program to a customer record so the right freight logic applies automatically whenever that customer orders. Customers the program doesn't apply to won't see any freight charge on their orders.

» When freight can't be calculated automatically

Scenario What to do
Freight varies by weight and distance, case by case Use the notification-only model so buyers know freight is added at invoicing
Multiple orders combined into one shipment Handle freight at invoicing rather than auto-charging on each cart
Selected shipping method has no freight logic set up Choose a method that has freight logic configured, or enter the freight value manually

Note:

  • When a cart contains a large number of SKUs, freight can take a little longer to calculate. This is expected, but if the delay seems unusually long, contact support.

  • If freight automation is set up but isn't behaving as expected, reach out to our support team.
